Celebrity MUAs reveal their tips and tricks to creating a make up look that stays put all day – no matter how high the temperatures soar.

When heat rises and humidity hits, applying makeup suddenly becomes a lot trickier — and stickier. Whether you favour full-coverage or tend to opt for a lighter look, you’re likely to have experienced those frustrating moments during high heat where your makeup has sweated off or smudged, causing all your hard work — and products — to go to waste.

Daniel Kolaric, celebrity makeup artist to the likes of Mariah Carey and Georgina Rodríguez, and makeup masterclass aficionado Joy Adenuga share their tips to creating a perfect summer look.

What are the best ways to prep our skin in the summer?

Before discussing the makeup itself, it’s imperative to prepare the skin to stay hydrated and protected. According to Daniel, who recently returned from this year’s Met Gala in New York, an oil-free serum, moisturiser and SPF should be your go-to combination during summer. “Our face is the most exposed, yet most delicate feature of our bodies,” he says.

“So protect it at all costs to prevent against damage like pigmentation and sunspots.” Joy similarly points to the importance of hydration in warmer weather, saying products like mists can help keep your skin looking plump and radiant, even in the heat.

Having crafted the red-carpet looks for singer Leigh Anne Pinnock, Bridgerton’s India Amarteifio and Heartstopper’s Corinna Brown, Joy emphasises the need for a high-quality primer. “A good primer acts as a barrier between your skin and your makeup, helping to create a smooth canvas and prolong the wear of your products,” she explains. “Opt for a mattifying primer, especially in areas prone to excess oiliness, to help control shine and prevent makeup from sliding off.”

Should we avoid foundation during hot weather?

Wearing foundation on a hot day is a dangerous game, and whether you’re sizzling in the city or on a beach getaway, it can be challenging to keep your look in place. Daniel suggests swapping a heavier foundation for an oil-free tinted moisturiser that will still provide enough coverage to even out the skin tone. Then, if you need more coverage, you can go in with a concealer to address your specific areas of concern.

“Be very light handed when you apply, so the skin can breathe and look natural,” he explains. Sweat-proof formulas are your new best friend this summer, and Joy says that you should be looking for products labelled as ‘waterproof’ or ‘sweat-resistant’ to ensure your makeup stays put. She also recommends setting your look with a translucent powder. “Focus on areas that tend to get oily, such as the T-zone, and gently dust a light layer of powder over your foundation and concealer.”

How can we create a look that glows?

Despite our best efforts, our makeup is bound to alter in the heat, so we might as well play into it with a dewy, glowing look. “During summer, I tend to use more cream-based products, as they tend to melt into the skin better,” says Daniel.

Similarly, Joy encourages embracing the carefree spirit of summer — emphasising that less is more. “Embrace the radiant glow of summer by choosing products that impart a dewy, luminous finish. Dewy skin looks fresh, youthful and effortlessly beautiful,” she says.
