When a product blows up on TikTok, you can be sure it’ll sell out in seconds, and that’s exactly what happened with Tower 28’s SOS Daily Rescue Facial Spray.

After a video went viral that sang the product’s praises and said it could reduce redness and breakouts, the term ‘hypochlorous acid’ suddenly flooded feeds.

Its miracle-like qualities include soothing skin, reducing inflammation and removing bacteria to reduce breakouts, but the molecule is also frequently used in surface cleaning products and disinfectants, which begs the question — should we be using hypochlorous acid on our skin? We spoke to experts in the skincare industry to find out.

 What is hypochlorous acid?

“Hypochlorous acid — or HOCl — is a naturally occurring molecule that our immune system produces to protect the body from harmful pathogens and to promote healing.

“While it might sound intimidating because of its association with bleach, in carefully controlled amounts, HOCl is actually very gentle and safe for the skin,” says Dr Munir Somji, clinical director of the Dr MediSpa clinics.

“It acts as a powerful antimicrobial agent, helping to eliminate bacteria and support the skin’s natural healing processes. This unique balance makes it an exceptional ingredient in clinical skincare.”

What are the benefits of using hypochlorous acid on skin?

“Hypochlorous acid offers several benefits for the skin,” says Dr Ed Robinson, a GMC-registered aesthetics doctor. It’s effective at reducing inflammation, controlling acne-causing bacteria and accelerating wound healing. It can also calm irritation, reduce redness and support the skin’s natural barrier without disrupting the microbiome.”

Is hypochlorous acid suitable for all skin types?

“Because of its gentle yet effective nature, HOCl is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and reactive skin,” explains Dr Somji.

Would you recommend using it post-workout to help prevent breakouts?

“Yes, I strongly recommend using hypochlorous acid after workouts to help prevent breakouts,” says Dr Somki. “When we exercise, sweat and bacteria can accumulate on the skin, potentially clogging pores and triggering acne.

“Using a hypochlorous acid spray post-workout effectively cleanses the skin, reduces inflammation and minimises the risk of breakouts. This is especially helpful if you’re unable to shower immediately after exercising, as it provides an extra layer of protection to keep your skin clear and healthy.”
