Making sustainable diet changes

During a TikTok Live on April 22, Lizzo candidly unpacked the lifestyle changes she’s made since 2023.

She has publicly stated that at her heaviest, she weighed 325 lbs. Earlier this year, she shared that she had lowered her body mass index by 10.5 points and reduced her body fat by 16%.

But for the Grammy winner, this journey is about far more than numbers.

“I had to start applying a calorie deficit, because I was prone to binging,” Lizzo explained. But she was quick to clarify — this isn’t about obsessive counting. “I don’t think it’s healthy to count calories. I use it as a tool to fight against the American food system.”

In classic Lizzo style, her approach is rooted in empowerment, not restriction. She’s swapped sugary snacks for savoury, nourishing breakfasts — think almond butter and toast — and is tuned in to what fuels her body best. “Everybody’s body is different. Find out what works for you,” she urged her followers.

Lizzo also revealed that she’s cut down on her Starbucks orders after realising that she was drinking 1,200 calories per day.

Her philosophy? Simple science. “The only thing that works across the board, science-wise, is calories in versus calories out,” she said matter-of-factly.

But don’t mistake her pragmatism for pressure — Lizzo is all about honouring your own timeline, your own choices and your own joy.

A mindful approach

Beyond food and fitness, she’s done the emotional heavy lifting, too.

“I’ve been working to get my anxiety under control for years,” she shared. “Then I decided that I want to release. I’m ready to stop waiting to be myself fully and be happy.”

That meant mindfulness, meditation and a conscious decision to step away from distractions — whether in the form of people, food or unhealthy habits.

“I loved to distract myself… and I stopped doing that,” she said. “I just focused on me.”

It’s a refreshingly holistic take on health — one that embraces mental wellness just as much as physical transformation.

She continues to encourage her fans to embrace their beauty exactly as they are.

In an Instagram video earlier this month, she addressed body dysmorphia with a rallying cry: “Take the compliment.” Her words hit with clarity and compassion: “You look good. They’re not lying to you… Compliment yourself.”

Lizzo’s Ozempic allegations

Of course, no conversation about celebrity body changes is complete without speculation.

In September 2024, Lizzo playfully shut down Ozempic rumours after sharing the results of months of strength training and nutritional changes.

“When you finally get Ozempic allegations after five months of weight training and calorie deficit,” she captioned one video, clapping back with her trademark wit.

To one commenter, she simply replied, “Whyyyy do u follow me?”

In a culture obsessed with quick fixes and comparison traps, Lizzo’s sustainable, science-backed approach is a refreshing reminder: health isn’t a look, it’s a lifestyle. And confidence? That’s the real glow-up.
