The capital’s array of prix fixe menus at fine-dining establishments is unmatched. Here, Living360 highlights the very best, for both taste and value.

London is an international hub for theatregoers, home to one of the world’s most vibrant, long-running and diverse theatre scenes. While the West End is the beating heart of it all, iconic theatres can be found across the city, from Victoria to the Southbank.

And, wherever there’s a theatre, there’s usually a host of restaurants nearby, offering competitively priced dinner menus to lure in the spectators.

L360 has rounded up the best value pre-theatre menus in the West End and beyond, offering prix fixe menus that mean you can enjoy a fine-dining experience for far less than you’d normally pay.

From quirky London restaurants to romantic Valentine’s Day spots, we’d wager these restaurants offer a great night out, even if you don’t have a ticket.

Dalloway Terrace

Get your evening off to a decadent start at the Dalloway Terrace, the charming restaurant housed within the Bloomsbury Hotel.

You might know Dalloway Terrace for its exquisite afternoon tea, but it also offers an impressive pre-theatre menu. Starters include pumpkin and pecorino mafalde (a ribbon-shaped pasta), and dressed burrata, while mains range from celeriac risotto to a venison ragu.

There are no desserts included in this pre-theatre menu, but if you want to splash out a little, you can order one off the a la carte menu.

  • When: Monday to Sunday, 5.30pm to 6pm (for groups of up to six)
  • Where: 16-22 Great Russell St, WC1B 3NN

For more information or to book, visit Dalloway Terrace.

Bocca Di Lupo

£18 for two courses, £26 for three courses

Bocca Di Lupo offers the best value pre-theatre on this list, offering two courses for under £20. But make no mistake, there’s no scrimping on quality here, with the ever-changing menu serving traditional but interesting Italian fare based on seasonal produce. The vibrant trattoria is in the middle of Soho, so it’s well located for the Lyric, Sondheim and Gielgud theatres, but it’s also pretty convenient for most West End shows.

The menu is fixed, so it’s not a brilliant choice if you have any dietary requirements, but if you’re open-minded about what you eat, you won’t be disappointed. You can see the current menu on the restaurant’s website ahead of booking.

  • When: Monday to Friday, 12pm to 6.30pm
  • Where: 12 Archer Street, W1D 7BB

For more information or to book, visit Bocca Di Lupo.

Heliot Steak House

£27 for two courses, £29 for three courses

For a lavish Vegas-style pre-theatre meal, head to Heliot Steak House, located at The Hippodrome in the heart of theatreland in Leicester Square. Offering two courses for £27 and three for £29, both including a complimentary glass of prosecco, it offers seriously good value for money in an unbeatable location.

Despite the name, the menu caters to all tastes, with options ranging from grilled octopus and Korean-style salmon to a mushroom tower or Argentinian sirloin steak. If you have room, finish with a selection of cooling sorbets and ice creams or opt for an indulgent cake.

It’s probably one of those places you’ve walked past dozens of times without paying much attention to it (because, let’s be honest, which Londoners actually eat in Leicester Square?) — but it’s well worth your attention. Just bear in mind that it’s within a casino, so it’s strictly adults-only.

  • When: Monday to Sunday, 5pm to 9.30pm
  • Where: The Hippodrome Casino, Cranbourn St, Leicester Square, WC2H 7JH

For more information or to book, visit The Hippodrome Casino.

Balthazar

£24.50 for two courses, £27.50 for three courses

Located a stone’s throw from Covent Garden’s famous piazza, Balthazar offers classic French dining in a relaxed but elegant setting. The Parisian-style brasserie normally comes in at anything from £50 to £80 per diner, with drinks, so its prix fixe menu, which also includes a glass of fizz, is great value.

The menu is extensive, with a range of indulgent fish, veggie and meat options, including moules marinière and steak frites (the steak frites are available for a small supplement). We recommend the creme brulee for dessert, featuring layers of creamy vanilla custard with a satisfying, crunchy caramel disk on top.

  • When: Monday to Friday, 11am to 7pm
  • Where: 4-6 Russell Street, London, WC2B 5HZ

For more information or to book, visit Balthazar Restaurant.

At £32 for two courses, it’s one of the more expensive options on the list, but it still offers brilliant value, as the mains on the a la carte menu range from £23 to £60.

The Palm House

£19.50 for two courses, £22.50 for three courses

There aren’t many pre-theatre options around Victoria, which seems strange, considering there are two major theatres nearby: the Apollo Victoria Theatre and Victoria Palace Theatre. But perhaps you don’t need many options when you can just go to The Palm House, a vibrant restaurant located moments away from the Palace.

The crowd-pleasing menu features a range of Latin American-inspired dishes like bistec de palomilla (grilled flat iron steak) and sizzling fajitas, as well as a great selection of sweet treats, including a mouth-watering baked Basque cheesecake.

It definitely has more of a party atmosphere than some of the other places on this list, but that will get you raring and ready for the night ahead.

  • When: Monday to Friday, 4pm to 8pm
  • Where: 150 Victoria St, SW1E 5LB

For more information or to book, visit The Palm House.

Gunpowder

£22 per person for five sharing plates

Located minutes away from the Bridge Theatre, Unicorn Theatre and Southwark Playhouse, Gunpowder serves contemporary family-style Indian cuisine. The pre-theatre includes five small plates for £22 per person, including dishes like the Gunpowder chaat, Bengali beetroot croquettes and tandoori chicken chops. The deal is based on more than two people ordering, and you should speak to the team in advance if you have any dietary requirements.

Gunpowder also has branches in Soho and Spitalfields, if that’s closer to home (or the show!)

  • When: Monday to Saturday, 5.30 to 6.30pm
  • Where: 4 Duchess Walk, Tower Bridge, SE1 2SD
