Deodorant vs antiperspirant: how to find a safe underarm deodorant

Looking for a new deodorant to keep sweaty patches and stinky pits to a minimum? L360 rounds up our favourites.

Mitchum, a well-known anti-perspirant brand, recently came under fire as users reported rashes and itching, resulting in a product being recalled. To make sure you stay safe, we’ve rounded up our favourite deodorants and anti-perspirants that are suitable for anyone to use and won’t cause any side effects.

Deodorants aren’t inherently bad for your skin. However, some may cause reactions due to sensitivity to the ingredients, and the aluminium in some anti-perspirants can be harmful. The purpose of this ingredient is to temporarily block the sweat glands, which is what stops us from sweating, but sometimes it can cause irritation, particularly just after shaving.

Deodorant vs antiperspirant: what’s the difference?

While deodorants mask and neutralise body odour, antiperspirants work to reduce sweating. Neither trumps the other!

What’s the safest deodorant to use?

To help you select the best option for your skin, we’ve selected our top pick of deodorants. Always be sure to patch test before using a new product.

Fussy Deodorant

This brand has exploded over the past couple of years, thanks to its fun packing and unique scent options like golden oud, parma violets and jasmine bloom.

Fussy’s founder, Matt Kennedy, says “Our base formula is 100% natural and a combination of only eight ingredients: sunflower wax, coconut oil, shea butter, caprylic, tapioca, sodium bicarb, magnesium hydroxide and a probiotic. To make our gorgeous scents, we simply blend these ingredients with an essential oil.”

Malin + Goetz Otto Deodorant

The limited-edition Otto Deodorant from Malin + Goetz is a gender-neutral scent and provides odour protection for up to 12 hours. If you’re used to using a regular aluminium-loaded anti-perspirant, it can take time for your body to adjust to using a plant-powered formula — so do be patient.

It has cornstarch and kaolin clay in the formula, which helps to absorb excess moisture rather than blocking the glands altogether as aluminium does.

AKT The Deodorant Balm

We had to include the product that paved the way for natural deodorants. Those who sweat excessively will see results with this one instantly.

The deodorant comes in a tube similar to toothpaste, and can be rubbed in with the hands or an applicator tool that can be purchased separately. It can make for a messy application, so if you’d rather not have the extra clean up, this probably isn’t the product for you.

That said, this product has been formulated for use across the entire body and can be applied anywhere you need it.

Uni. Skin Soothing Deodorant

For sensitive skin and underarms, this delicate natural formula from Uni is minimally scented and has a water-based formula. It uses sugar-derived enzymes that neutralise odour, as well as green seaweed, holy basil and lady thistle, which soothe irritation. It also has a thin texture, which means it’s not as heavy duty as some of the other products in our list.
